Oakmoss (Evernia Prunastri) is a lichen that grows on the branches and trunks of oak trees.
It is commonly found in temperate mountain forests in the Northern Hemisphere. It varies in color from white, green, or yellow. When extracted with solvents or vacuum distilled, the oil is dark green or brown. It has a sharp, alluring aroma of earth, bark, leaves, and forest. It blends well with floral scents and is a good fixative. It is used as an important ingredient in perfumery. There have been reports of concern about skin allergies, so its use is limited to appropriate amounts.
