The fragrance pyramid provides a more detailed description of a perfume’s scent. Since each perfume consists of multiple scent layers, the fragrance pyramid explains which scents are perceived first and which come later. Each scent layer has different evaporation properties, allowing us to experience different notes over time. The scent timeline can be divided as follows:
Top Notes (or Head Notes): These are the scents perceived immediately upon application. They are usually light and evaporate quickly, such as citrus, green, or fresh notes. The duration typically lasts around 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the concentration of the fragrance compounds used.
Middle Notes (or Heart Notes): These emerge after the top notes have faded and are considered the core of the perfume, unifying all fragrance compounds. Common middle notes include floral, fruity, or spicy scents. The duration generally ranges from 20 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the concentration of the compounds used.
Base Notes (or Bottom Notes): These are the final notes that linger the longest on the wearer. Common base notes include woody, musky, leather, or vanilla scents. They can last for 6 hours or more, depending on the concentration of the fragrance compounds.
Note: Some fragrance compounds can serve as both top and middle notes, or as both middle and base notes.
